Navajo Culture: Celebration of Complex Gender Identities
I posted a clip of this recently, but I found the full version! This is so interesting. It makes so much sense to me. They talk about the world having a balance of masculine and feminine, and the historic role of Two Spirit (transgendered/genderqueer) people in the Navajo community. Since gender was seen as a spectrum, marriage was open to all people.
Terms such as transgender and gay are strictly new constructs that assume three things: that there are only two sexes (male/female), as many as two sexualities (gay/straight), and only two genders (man/woman). Gender and sexuality are fluid, and almost never fit in these standards.

Pansexuality has always seemed like the closest related label for myself. It’s very unfair that there is a term defining a person who loves guys and girls but no term describing a person who only loves genderqueer/agendered people.
